One of the defining aspects of advancements in devices hasn’t been tech innovations but design. While people could assert that technology and design developments go together, it is also simple to see how design rules consumer habits. Still, this is not a new trend since industrialized production enabled producers to offer cheaper products where the onus was on design instead of functionality. For example, the paper clothing of the 60s were very cheap and of a poor finish yet for some fashionable buyers they were must have wardrobe items.
This process continues today. Phone manufacturers continually push and pull on the dichotomy of design vs functionality. Many designers choose simple designs and instead rely on features. Many others choose to feature less features and instead focus on design, sometimes even working with singers.
With this attention given to design over usability, it is easy to think of technology products as simply design orientated but it’s good to remember that these devices are meant to have functional benefits as well. When you are picking a product there tends to be three different factors that you have to think about – cost, design and features. Sometimes you may want to spend more on design and at other times for features. At other times design and functionality are merged. Apple’s product design ethos is an awesome example of design meeting technology.
If you always buy products based on their design then you should really start to think about the functional element as well. Although it may be tempting to get the coolest designed product, it may not be the most robust. You should always look at the functionality of the product and how you will be using it. There is little point getting a really flash computer if all you do is write emails or browse the Internet.
So, when buying new products, always think about how you will use it or why you need it. A good example is e-book readers (such as the Amazon Kindle). These have practical uses in real life. E.g., loads of airlines are now limiting passengers to only one piece of luggage. An e-book reader is much smaller than the average book and you can take a lot more books with you when you go on holiday than you might otherwise be able to.
Mobile phones are a good example of improved technology features. You can take your phone for all your multi-media needs. Many now feature large amounts of memory allowing you to save music, videos and pictures on there. Many cell phones now have digital cameras as well, meaning you won’t have to buy a separate, pricey camera. The web is not any different. Plenty of websites have been designed with functionality and usability in mind. You are able to find sites which were created to allow you to manage online time better. They vary from a bookmarking service, password store and personalized homepage.
A passwords manager will save you time and change your work process. Unfortunately, lots of them have a more basic layout. It will be intriguing to watch how they will evolve over time as more and more people come to expect functionality that is displayed in a well designed end product.
