Samsung’s latest TVs offer 1080p24 film cadence for smoother playback of movies and TV shows. This type of resolution preserves the film look for 24p video sources, while improving motion resolution with 30/60Hz video sources. This technology also enables a television to display 1080 lines of detail in full.
Some displays are capable of deinterlacing to detect the two-thirds cadence in 1080i content, stripping the second cadence and rebuilding the image as a multiple of 24. Other displays, like Sony’s and LG’s, use a custom setting for this purpose. Fortunately, the process isn’t complicated; the display itself does a lot of the processing.
Samsung’s BD-F6500 has excellent video processing, and the result is impressive. The TV reproduces the SMPTE 133 test signal with no jaggies. It also handles 1080i natively, and deinterlaces both 480i and 576i signals. It also detects the two:2 film cadence accurately.
While the previous generation of Samsung Blu-ray players supported only 480i or 480p, the latest models support 1080p24 and 1080p60. The latter two are only available if the software has been encoded as such. Fortunately, if you’re using a Samsung Blu-ray player, you can enjoy the benefits of 1080p24 and 1080p60, even if you don’t have a Samsung TV.
